How to Read a Nutrition Mark on Foods

Take a look at the ingredients very carefully in order to know the nutrition facts. First, you should know that the order the ingredients appear will tell you which ingredients are in the highest amounts.

For instance, if it lists sugar first, then beware, because that means it is most likely not healthy food. Sugar may not be listed as just the word “sugar.” It could also be in the form of brown sugar, nectar, honey, agave, glucose, dextrose, fructose, or malt syrup. Even if the sweetening comes from natural sources, it still may not be part of recipes healthy for you or your family.  It all depends on the amount of the sweetening in the product.

Also look for items such as partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated oils, which stand for trans fats. Trans fats are added to many of today’s foods in order to enhance the flavor and get them to have a longer shelf life. But these trans fats are used in recipes merely to make you want to eat the products and then they end up clogging a person’s arteries if they eat too much of foods with them in it.

You should also look to see if the foods have a large amount of salt or other fats, as both of these can cause health risks. Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure or other issues and too much stout can cause high cholesterol and other issues. If you want to be eating healthy food, then you should eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium daily, unless you have high blood pressure already, and then the amount should be less than 1,500 mg daily, as regulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Calories are another issue, especially if you are trying not to gain weight. The calories, fats, and other ingredients listed on a mark are in relation to a specific size of serving, which will also be listed on the mark. One should note that this is also based on what is considered a basic diet consisting of 2,000 calories a day, but that amount isn’t going to match everyone’s calorie intake, so it often isn’t very realistic for people to use. It is better for you to concentrate on the amount of each of the nutrients and other ingredients if you want to be using healthy food for yourself or your family.

Eating Out at Restaurants

Another way to eat healthy food is to be more careful when you are eating out at restaurants. Many restaurants will have their menu listed with the nutrition facts about their dishes. It would behoove the health conscious person to read this menu prior to going out so that you can be sure of the recipes at the restaurant being full of healthy food for you to delight in.

For instance, you also should be aware of the wording on the menu. If the dish says that it hfas a creamy sauce, then chances are it is full of butter, or other fatty products. If you want healthy food, then you should instead order grilled meats or baked meats like lean steak or chicken or a baked or grilled fish and leave off the buttery sauces. If you must have sauce, stick with one made with tomatoes and you will get the health benefits of vitamin c, and other nutritional items.

You should also choose grilled or steamed vegetables to accompany your meat and pastas or breads or rice that are whole grain. And for dessert, try a nice fruit plate with the fruits that are in season instead of calorie and stout laden cakes and cookies. You can even delight in a small glass of red wine because the grapes in it have antioxidant like properties that help protect you against cancer, as shown in many studies.

Whatever the case, it is possible to get healthy food and find recipes that are excellent for you and your family, as well as eat out and still stay healthy.
